Hispanic Organization for Public Employees (HOPE), a CPS Energy networking group, will award a $3,000 scholarship to one Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), St. Mary’s University and University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student and three $1,500 awards to Alamo Colleges scholars at its 8th Annual Hispanic Heritage Banquet, slated for Sept. 22, 2011 at Villita Assembly Building, 203 Presa Street. All three universities and Palo Alto College have agreed to match the awards. OLLU, St. Mary’s and UTSA scholarships were open to the community at large, while the Alamo Colleges awards will go to dependents of active and retired CPS Energy employees.

“In a time when funding for education has become so challenging, HOPE is excited to offer scholarships for local students,” stated Sylvia Vasquez, HOPE president. “We thank our partners Our Lady of the Lake, St. Mary’s and UTSA for providing matching funds. This really maximizes the award and goes a long way in helping students reach their greatest potential.”

HOPE raised the 2011 scholarship funds last fall at its annual Hispanic Heritage Banquet that honors prominent Hispanic community leaders. Tables for this year’s banquet can be purchased by calling Trisha Gonzalez at 353-2862 or clicking here.

Since 2005, HOPE has awarded $43,250 in scholarships to local students.

2010 Scholarship Recipients

HOPE awarded $12,000 in scholarships to four students in September 2010. St. Mary’s University and the University of Texas Health Science Center both matched the $3,000 scholarship at the $1,500 and $3,000 level, respectively. The 2010 HOPE scholars included:
